John E. Brooks resides in Seaford where his family (Verity, Southard, Raynor and Bedell) have deep roots going back more than 300 years with service in both the American Revolution and the War of 1812.
Brooks a lifelong resident of Long Island has played a very active role in the community. He has been a volunteer Fireman for more than 45 years and remains an active member today. He has held a number of Firematic Offices in the fire service including Chief of Department of the Seaford Fire Department. He as one of the first two members of the Seaford Fire Department to become certified as an EMT and also an AEMT. He was also the originating chairman of the fire departments annual Holiday Tree Lighting Program. Brooks also served on the Seaford Board of Education for a number of years three of which he served as Vice President. Brooks was also Chairman of the Long Island Hurricane Symposium Programs where working with hurricane experts, the national weather service and the weather channel presentations were made concerning Hurricane Risk here on Long Island long before there was a Hurricane Sandy.
Professionally Brooks has a long career in the Insurance Industry holding executive position with GEICO Insurance, U.S. Capital Insurance and he was the founder of the Teachers’ Insurance Plan program. Following his career in the insurance industry he moved into government where he was the first Director of Risk Management where he established risk management and safety programs for the County producing documents savings and lost cost avoidance of $84 Million. Brooks also lead a challenged to the New York State Health Insurance Plans’ rate increases successfully have the rate increase rolled back and producing a statewide savings of more than $300 Million. As a result of his efforts he was appointed to the New York State Health Insurance Plan PAC becoming Nassau County’s first representation on the committee and producing addition rate savings in following year’s health insurance rates.
Educationally Brooks holds a Bachelor’s Degree from New York Institute of Technology and an Associate’s Degree from the State University of New York at Farmingdale. He is a veteran having served in the Rainbow Division of the NYARNG as a medic.
